Sealed With A Kiss

According to The (Un) Official J. Crew Blog, 770/Behind The Line, "Our favorite go-to beauty tip is adding a bold lip color. We are partial to a quirky coral but could never find one that was just right, so we called in an expert to help us make our own! This season we have collaborated with Poppy King to make our dream lip color:a bit of red with a hint of coral. It's the perfect shade of Poppy. Worn here by a few of our women's designers-you can see it's a color that everyone can agree on!"
I love a bold lip also. Like nail polish, lipstick is an easy way to transition to a new season without spending a lot of money. I've always liked the lipstick choices that were used in the catalog/online so I was psyched when I found out the name of one of the shade that I kept admiring, a super bright pink by Nars called Funny Face. I wear it almost daily. So you can imagine that I'm thrilled that J. Crew has partnered with Poppy King (aka the Lipstick Queen) to produce a shade of their own. Since I'm trying to spend less on clothes, I'll be buying this to add to my lipstick collection. My non-J. Crew collection includes many shades that my favorite bloggers wear and thankfully post. If you're a fan of bold color but want to spend less than the $18 price tag for this new creation, I suggest Revlon's Orange Flip, Hot Melon, Persian Melon, and Lilac Champagne or Maybelline's Coral Crush or Covergirl's Spellbound Envoutee.

You can find out more about Poppy by visiting http://www.lipstickqueen.com/. Ms. King also just teamed up with Kate Spade to create a capsule collection called "Supercalifragilipstick" for fall. There will be four different shades available: Pop Art Pink (a light pink), Bashful Blush (a sheer nude), Fuchsia Fete (a sheer fuchsia) and Adventurous Red (a sheer red).

Quick Reviews!

This week has gotten off to a crazy start, but a few boxes full of new fall arrivals arrived at my house and I just had to post a quick review!

So, the Maisie Dress in waterfloral. I was really looking forward to this one, but I just can't do it in person. The fit is great (TTS in terms of J. Crew dress size) but it's very crepe-y rather than chiffon-y (if that makes any sense) and that, combined with the floral pattern, just made me think of this:

Yes, the floral baby doll dresses Kelly and Brenda used to wear in the first iteration of 90210. I was around the first time, and had a few floral baby doll dresses myself. So while I know that the 90s are on trend, I just can't do it again. I did really like the fit and shape though, so maybe I'll try it in a solid?

Onto better things (at least for me - I'm sure some of you will be able to rock the patterned Maisie...:)

The Ruthie Dress. I really liked this one! It's not as pleat-y IRL as it is on the model (which was a little bit of a bummer for me - I heart pleats) but other than that, I think the product shot is pretty accurate. The wool (10%) and cotton (90%) blend worked out fine - it's a little scratchy and I won't be able to wear it until the humidity is gone, but those factors weren't deal breakers for me. One word of advice - those with bigger shoulders/chest will probably want to size up. I did, and there was still slight pulling at the buttons. But again, this wasn't a deal breaker because I love the shape and I'm sure a little fashion tape will solve that issue easily.

So those are my quick reviews!

Score: one keep (Ruthie), one return (Maisie).

Stay tuned - I'll try to do more quick reviews soon!

True 'Crew Love: Our Favorite Fall 2011 New Arrivals

We are in love with all the new arrivals for Fall just released last week. We love the colors, the classic blazers, the fabrics, the collection pieces. Do you want to find out what our favorite pieces are? Then keep on reading and let us know what pieces of the new collection you've fallen in love with. We would love to hear all about your picks.
No. 2 pencil skirt in double-serge wool, heather acorn. Classic skirt for the fall in a warm, neutral color.
Fisherman's henley sweater. I love the visual interest of this sweater -- the placket, chunkiness, mild cabling, and crest buttons. The two colors appeal to me and the fact that I can wear under a nice shirt means I can carry this off for work.
I'm liking the print of the Maisie dress in waterfloral, not sure of the cut yet.
Pia calf hair pumps are so pretty though heel height keeps me from biting.
Jackie cardigan in african violet. Nice blue/ purple color.
Minnie pant in twill. Nice twist on a classic.
Perfect-fit flower tank in warm mustard. I have this one white and madagascar peri already and think they're charming.

First up is something I actually don't have in my closet, a perfect blue jacket. Most blue shades wash me out, but the blue of the Hacking jacket is on the right side of warm to work with my skin tone.
And second, I wouldn't be dinagideon if I didn't get a beautifully printed dress, the Bonnie dress in toile jacquard. Any of you who have spent any time over at my superfluities know about my love for super girly printed frocks.

Pia calf hair pumps, This is not within my budget but a dream item:)
Edie purse in Italian calf hair, This is not within my budget but a dream item :)

I love jackets (as I professed in my "not without my navy blue blazer" post)! Stay tuned for reviews as typically don't deny my jacket habit (wink wink).

Fall is sweater time for me...I can't wait to wrap myself in cozy cocooning
layers. So is it any wonder that I'm dying for the Cashmere Ribbed Sweater?
I love the heather gray...it will go with literally anything in my closet
and with a classic white shirt or colorful tank peeking out below, I can do
anything with it.
I am so digging the café capri in wool.
My wardrobe just might need a shot of some bright pants to liven up all the
black, navy, cream, and gray sweaters. Now the only question is...bright
dahlia, yacht blue or baked citron? (I think I just heard dinagideon
applauding!!)
I am desperately hoping the planets align and the Dolman-sleeve
sweater-dress actually works. The heather saddle color with black tights & boots would be
perfection....and then I might actually not need to buy anything else for
the rest of the season.

Lemme tell you, it was really hard to pick no more than 3! I had a whole list of maybe 20 or more! Hahahaha! But for sure the theme for J.Crew's Fall 2011 collection: color. I love how they've brought back vibrant colors back for Fall 2011. Oh, how I've missed them. :) Here are my favorite, top 3 from the collection:

Silk Blythe Blouse - in extravagant green (extravagant indeed!)
Clipper cardigan - in all the colors, even black (AND it's machine washable! Jackpot!)
Cavalry Skirt - love that color! And the buttons! The buttons!

The Ruthie shirtdress, a truly timeless dress.
The Starlee sequin dress, because a girl can't never have too many sequins in her closet.
The Technicolor tweed jacket. Great for a casual look with jeans and with a dress for a more dressy occasion.

J. Crew: Sample Versus Real.

Hi, there.  :)

I have a suspicion that many of you know this already, being the very savvy J. Crew fans that you all are, but...just in case you don't know this...J. Crew will order, up to a year in advance, a sample of the piece of clothing they are thinking of selling in the future.  Every single item, whether it is a bathing suit, a cardigan, a pair of pants, or a pair of shoes will have this happen to them before they ever debut on-line or in the stores.  These samples are made with very specific guidelines, so J. Crew gets a chance to see how a color works in real life, how the shape works, etc.  Sometimes samples are good to go from the beginning, and then further sized samples are made (so you know ALL clothing samples start off in a size 6, shoes are a size 7.5, I believe).  Sometimes samples are so terrible, and laughable (trust me, I have seen some doozies pop up on ebay), they are left in that stage to forever be the only one that exists just like it.  Other times samples are okay, but the color or shape left something to be desired, and another similar type made it into real production.

Here is something I do to grab pieces from J. Crew that I will not see in real life (because it is one of a kind) or will be so out of my price range that I only can buy it if I either save my pennies OR if I get the sample off ebay (and often unknowing of how expensive it will one day be)...I go and spend a lot of time with the ebay search "j crew sample."  (Remember to click the "include description" box, a lot of sellers only mention it in the text of the description.)

Case in point...the Confetti Sequin Sweater.  I inadvertently bought it in January 2011 without knowing it would be a $425 Collection sweater.  Umm, okay.  It was on ebay for sale for about $65 and I thought it was cute.  It came in three colors, the white version I own (with greenish sequins), an olive version, and another color which I am having a hard time imagining now (it's been six months, lol).

At the time, I thought I was buying a version of the Sequin Boy Tee because it sort of looked like it (and one of the sweaters was olive).  Turns out that I was so very wrong...

Confetti Sequin Sweater.  Its description is how I knew I had bought this one instead of the Sequin Boy Tee: Tiny cupped, hand-applied sequins—in a mix of matte and glossy—create a stunning starburst effect. A shirred neckline adds even more dimension to this unique, statement-making piece. A shimmering work of art you'll have for years and years to come. Linen/cotton. Loose fit. V-neck. Short sleeves. Hits below hip. Part of J.Crew Collection. Import.

And here is my $65, even more sequined version.  I actually prefer my version, which when I saw the Confetti Sequin Sweater debut...made me actually pump my fists all excited like--I happened upon an item that is amazingly special, in a better color, and for so much cheaper.  It was a wonderful day.  I felt like the smartest shopper that day.  (However, as many of you know, my bubble was insanely burst with the whole Floral Swing Skirt debacle.  Le sigh.)

I loved the way they styled this top on jcrew.com, so I "borrowed" the look and paired the sweater with the Boardwalk shorts.  So you all know, the confetti sweater is a size small (which is the "sample" size for non-numeric items) and the shorts are a size 10 (I have the 8, and while they fit are very fitted, lol, anyone want to buy them from me for $27 shipped?).

It was my stepmom's birthday dinner.  We were going out for Mexican.  As lame as it sounds, the white, red, and green getup was intentional, but I do like the ballet flats with the outfit, definitely lends the look a more casual vibe.

This is a very loose fit.  It feels good on, and although you can see the stitching of the beading when you turn the top inside out, the stitching you can't even feel.

I love the wide shoulder line, helps make my shoulders appear more wide than they actually are.  If you need help boosting your upper body, this may be a top to consider (on super-sale, however, that $425, wowza!).

Last Minute Thoughts: This sweater is a nice cotton/linen knit, and those beads are well-applied and secure.  They are cupped looking and multi-tonal.  I know I will be able to pair this top with a jacket and jeans or pencil skirt for winter, so it is multi-seasonal.  Do I think it is $425 worth of pretty sequined sweater?  No.  Maybe $200, but only if you would wear it a lot.  Definitely $100.  For sure at $65.  :)

Have any of you all ever scored a sample that later turned out to be more special than you realized (from J. Crew, of course, but any other companies)?  Have you gone sample shopping from J. Crew (either on ebay or at one of their sample sales)?

This is my best score, by far...but I have also gotten samples of a lomellina one-shouldered swimsuit (it said photo on the special sample tag and was a size 4, so I am thinking it was for the catalog or web pictures?), many one of a kind dresses, cardigans, and skirts, a cashmere jacket (from fall 2007), and the Suzannah printed shirts (also from 2007).  All of them have been crazily inexpensive compared to their original prices.  Only the cashmere jacket was sort of pricey, but it was still far less expensive than the $795 they had originally charged when it debuted.

I look forward to seeing what other scores you all have made.  :)

Not Without My... Express Editor Pants

I know this blog is dedicated to J.Crew, but our "Not Without My" series is meant to showcase pieces we love from all brands, and even though I love J.Crew's suiting, I have to give it up for Express's Editor pant.  They claim that it's their "best known, best selling, most popular" pant, and I can definitely see why!  I own so many pairs of this pant, in many variations, and they've all held up well through days of wear and dry cleaning, over a few years.  They are my go-to pants for work and a major staple in my closet, year-round.

I've tried work pants from plenty of other brands - Gap, The Limited, Banana Republic, J.Crew - but I think the Express Editor pants stand out above all the others.  What I love the most about the pants is the cut - it's extremely flattering, and I've found that to be the case no matter what size I've worn - from my current size all the way up to the largest size they offer.  They fit well around the waist and hips, and I like to tell myself that they give me some length on the bottom half, and help me look nice and lean.

The fabric (I usually opt for the Luxury Stretch after having some issues with the regular cotton stretch) moves and lays nicely, and is not overly prone to wrinkling.  The pants are offered in three lengths - regular, short, and tall - and being only 5 feet tall, I love that I don't have to take in a pair of "short" pants for more alterations.

Express typically offers a number of patterns - especially stripes and checks - but it's their basic pitch black and heather grey colors that I like the best, as they're the most basic and versatile.  I travel every week for work, and I always have at least one pair of black Editor pants with me.

One of my favorite things about their pants is that they don't cost an arm and a leg (MSRP anywhere from $59.50 to $79.50 I believe), and you can almost always score some type of deal on them, whether it's an Express sale (percent off, BOGO half off, etc.) or an Express coupon!

J. Crew In Print

The August issue of Bazaar features an article entitled, "Spend vs. Save" by Anne Monoky. Marissa Webb, the head of women's design for J. Crew, is quoted as saying, "Fall is the perfect time to splurge on items you covet most. I love the richness of outerwear, and heading into the cold season, this is where I would invest. You'll be wearing your coat a lot, so make sure you love it!"

Here are a few of my favorite coats/jackets from the Fall 2011 J. Crew collection featured on Style.com. I am loving animal printed bags, shoes and this jacket, anything orange and the edgy mix of textures in the last shot. Is there any J. Crew outerwear item that has caught your eye?

I also received an email from Net-A-Porter that featured Marissa Webb as one of four NEW YORK DOLLS. The email read, Want to dress like a New Yorker? From Tibi to Alice + Olivia, discover the female designers setting the Big Apple's style agenda. Marissa Webb states,"J. Crew is a balance of classic and quirky that's easy to wear for any occasion." I think her quote describes my style and perfectly sums up why I love J. Crew.
